FLEXIBLE LEARNING CENTRE (FLC)

What is the Flexible Learning Centre?

The Flexible Learning Centre is a provision, designed for students with an EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan), wishing to study at A Level (Level 3), but are unable to access mainstream college. This may be due to additional needs such as neurodivergent conditions, severe health or mental health conditions.

All lessons are delivered through an international online learning platform (King’s Interhigh), which enables students to access their lessons both in college and at home. (We encourage students to attend their live online lessons on site at Thomas Rotherham College as much as possible.)

All lessons are recorded and archived; therefore, students can access lessons which may have been missed due to ill-health, at a convenient time for themselves.

It is located within a discreet area of the Learning Support & Student Wellbeing faculty and is managed and staffed by the Learning Support team. Each student is allocated a key worker within the Learning Support team, who will guide and offer support in all areas of study and college life, e.g. study skills, emotional wellbeing and pastoral events.

Our Flexible Learning Centre students benefit from facilities such as careers support, safeguarding and mental health services in Thomas Rotherham College, creating a hybrid approach between mainstream and alternative provision.

Life Skills Programme

We recognise the importance of our Flexible Learning Centre students developing their skills in order to successfully progress beyond educational attainment. We currently offer weekly sessions in:

· Social skills – Designed to improve confidence in communication skills in a safe space.

– Gain skills in formal & informal communicative contexts.

– Develop goals of social skills you will need to progress beyond TRC.

· Food preparation – Learn to use kitchen appliances and utensils, basic food preparation and cooking skills.

We plan to offer a broader option of lifeskills, in the future, including:

· Banking, gardening and travel training
