The qualification prepares learners to become Early Years Educators, enabling them to work with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5-7 years. Upon successful completion of the course you will gain a licence to practice.
The course is made up of 16 units including 1 professional practice portfolio which will allow you to link your classroom based theory into practice.
You will be required to undertake significant periods of work placement which will be assessed to develop your competence when caring for and interacting with babies and young children.
A minimum of 750 placement hours is required within the following 3 age ranges:
• 0 -1 year 11 months
• 2 -2 years 11 months
• 3 -5 years
This will be followed by a specialised placement, in the area of your choice.
This will be highlighted upon your yearly timetable showing where block periods of study/placement will occur.
The course also offers a number of visits that are specific and professionally relevant to the unit of study including:
• A trip to a Forrest School to gain experience and an understanding of international perspectives.
• A visit to the Children’s Ward at Rotherham Hospital.
Students are advised to purchase the College Childcare Polo Shirt to wear whilst on placements. This allows you to be identifiable and also promotes safeguarding. (These can be purchased during the Induction period for a cost of approx. £8 each.)

You must successfully complete:
14 mandatory units – Unit assessments for units 1–14 must be achieved at pass grade D or above. Units are assessed internally and marked by your Tutor. You must achieve a D grade/Pass grade to be awarded the unit.
Unit 16 Mandatory – Unit 16 must be achieved at a ‘Pass’ grade.
To achieve Technical Level 3 Diploma there will be TWO externally set and externally assessed synoptic assessments (Controlled Assessment) one assessment covering the contents of units 1–7 (CCE1) and one assessment covering units 9–14 (DCE2).
You MUST successfully complete the externally assessed controlled assessment in Year 1 to progress on to Year 2 of the course.
The course is equivalent to 3 A Levels which will be graded at A* – D grade, and will carry a maximum of 168 UCAS points.
Grade 4 in English and Maths.
Please note that this is a full time course equivalent to 3 A Levels; no other subjects are chosen alongside it.
