The Applied Science AAQ course is a single-award course designed to offer students the opportunity to study all three disciplines of science, providing them with a general foundation in many key scientific concepts.
The course is comprised of a mixture of externally examined units and internally assessed coursework units. The marks gained in each unit will contribute towards the final grade achieved.
In Y12 you will cover the following mandatory units:
Unit 1 – Principles and Applications of Biology
This unit explores the key components of biological science. It will examine cells and tissues, their varied structures and functions and the biological components that interact with their existence.
Unit 2 – Principles and Applications of Chemistry
Students will explore some of the fundamental concepts which underpin the chemistry and chemical reactions of the world around them.
Unit 3 – Principles and Applications of Physics
Students will explore the use of practical and mathematical skills in the study of waves, motion and electricity.
The content covered in these units will be assessed through external examinations in the summer of Year 12.
You will then complete two further coursework-based units (inc. Unit 4 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques). These will be assessed internally.
Unit 4 – Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
Students will be introduced to quantitative laboratory techniques, including chromatography, colorimetry and laboratory safety, which are relevant to the scientific laboratory environments.
Visits to Sheffield Hallam University laboratories, guest speakers from NHS and The University of Sheffield.
No more than £15 per study visit.
A combination of internally assessed coursework assignments and examinations.
General Level 3 entry requirements. Grade 4,4 in GCSE Science. Grade 4 in Maths.
This course would provide useful underpinning scientific knowledge for students studying a Health and Social Care, Psychology or Sports Science course.
