Rotherham Sitwell Rotary supports one of tomorrow’s nurses

A prospective nurse from Rotherham has received a boost for her studies following support from Rotherham Sitwell Rotary.

Each year since the Covid-19 pandemic Rotherham Sitwell Rotary has offered a Bursary for Nursing to a student from Thomas Rotherham College progressing to a local university to study nursing.  The 2025 recipient is Izabela Nawara who will now be studying the BSc (Honours) Nursing (Adult) at Sheffield Hallam University.

Izabela’s teachers  praise her exceptional achievements at Distinction Level in Health and Social Care.  She undertook an impressive range of work placements and received overwhelmingly positive feedback from these opportunities.

Rotarian Dr Gurnam Basran, formerly a Consultant at Rotherham District General Hospital who initiated the Bursary for Nursing, said, “As a family & community, we owe so much to our NHS.

As for me, it gave me “the best job in the world”. This lasted for some four decades with each day being full of challenges, rewards, and joy whilst trying to help others with clinical needs.

Seeing the NHS teams working through the challenging Covid era gave us an idea on how we could say thank you back to the NHS.

This was to kickstart a scheme to offer university students who had chosen to pursue a career in nursing in our area. This resulted in the Rotherham Rotary Bursary Award Scheme.

Our one wish is that this scheme will continue to be fruitful and valued and hopefully flourish”

Izabela said, “I am really grateful for all the support I received at Thomas Rotherham College and really pleased to be awarded this Bursary.  It will be really helpful in not only buying specialist equipment for the course but also go towards travel costs”

Izabela’s award celebrates the commitment of future nurses from Rotherham who are ready to care for people in a world where health and recovery are always changing . The Bursary for Nursing is not just financial support — it’s a vote of confidence in individuals who are ready to make a difference in healthcare.
